Glow-Worm F22 Fault Code Meaning, Cause & Fixes

Glow-Worm F22 Fault Code Meaning, Cause & Fixes

What does the F22 fault code mean on a Glow-Worm boiler?

Low water pressure is indicated by a Glow-Worm Energy boiler that displays the F22 fault code.

Hot water must circulate properly if it is to remain at constant pressure and the gas boiler may lock out until the problem is resolved if the pressure drops and luckily, fixing this issue can be quite easy on most Glow Worm boilers if there are no underlying issues and will have your hot water back up and running in no time.

Why does F22 cause my Glow Worm boiler to lock out? Can it be reset?

Glow Worm logo

A circulation problem is a system that has low water pressure or a possibility of the water temperature rising too fast. This will put excessive strain on expensive boiler components such as the heat exchanger or the pump. The cost of repairs would increase if the components were left in operation.

We don’t recommend resetting the boiler to clear a fault code. The boiler might work for about 1-2 minutes before the printed circuit board (PCB), determines that there is a fault. Damage could occur during these few minutes.

Talk to a Gas Safe engineer about boiler repair service instead of trying to reset your boiler. Only Gas Safe accredited technicians are legally permitted to repair gas appliances. If you have no hot water from your tap. they will be able diagnose the problem and fix it, then, they will reset the boiler to remove the F22 fault code and boiler lockout.

At what pressure should my GlowWorm boiler operate?

Boilers perform best at 1.3 bar. Always consult your owner’s manual. They will still work between 0.5 and 3 bar. They will stop working if they exceed 3 bar. High pressure can damage components and cause leaks.

Boiler pressure can cause many parts to wear out faster than necessary, if it is too low. The boiler’s pump is a typical example.

Your boiler will lock out if it drops below 0.5 bars.

What causes low boiler pressure?

It is possible that the engineer didn’t top off the boiler’s pressure before they worked on it, however, it is possible that the boiler was working fine before the fault occurred, but then suddenly shut down due to low pressure.

Pressure is created by the water content in a system but the pressure is also lost when water is lost through boiler leaks or pinhole leaks in radiators.

I have topped up my boiler’s pressure, now it is too high, what can I do?

Excessive boiler pressure can cause damage to expensive parts in a Glow Worm boiler and this can lead to expensive repairs in the long-term. You should not run your boiler at a higher than 1.3 bar.

There are two simple ways to get rid of water pressure if your boiler has been topped up to over 1.3 bars.

Locate the drain cock on the central heating system first. To drain the water outside, connect a small hose from your drain cock to it. It is important to have someone keep an eye on your boiler’s pressure and notify you when it drops below 1.3 bars.

If you cannot find the draincock, there are two options: drain water from towel rails or radiators. Each one will have a small valve. These bleed valves can get messy so be sure to cover floors and walls with a container to collect water

Turn the valve until the water pressure in your boiler drops below 1.3 bar. You may hear a hissing sound as you open the valve. The valve will begin to drain water once the hissing stops. This is air coming out of your heating system. This is a good thing. Air locks, which act as blockages, can cause your heating system to lose pressure and water not to circulate properly.

Can I reset my Glow Worm boiler so it can work again?

Glow Worm Boiler

Your Glow Worm boiler lock-out function is intended to protect internal components. It is not possible to reset the boiler and fix the problem. The pressure sensor will signal the printed circuit board (PCB) to tell it that the boiler is trying to start up. This will immediately cause a lockout.

A boiler repair engineer will be able to help you if you are unsure how to fix it, as well as other types of problems like water hammer occurrence. Once they have determined that the leak is fixed, they will reset your boiler.

Leaks can affect more than your boiler. You should fix any water leakage in your home immediately.

Is it possible to fix the boiler’s pressure by yourself?

The external filling loop can be used to top up the Glow Worm boiler water pressure. This small braided hose has a valve attached to it. It is usually located below the boiler’s casing. You can open this valve to allow water in the system and increase pressure.

This should get rid of any F22 fault codes

You should first consult an emergency heating engineer. The F22 fault code must be fixed in order to fix it on a long-term, permanent basis. Your system will continue to leak and your boiler will shut down soon.

At what pressure should my Glow Worm boiler operate?

Boilers perform best at 1.3 bar. Always consult your owner’s manual and they will still work between 0.5 and 3 bar. They will stop working if they exceed 3 bar as high pressure can damage components and cause leaks or in worse case scenarios, a boiler explosion.

Your boiler will lock out if it drops below 0.5 bars.

Low pressure in a boiler is what causes a Glow Worm f22 fault.

It is possible that the engineer didn’t top off the boiler’s pressure before they worked on it, however, it is possible that the boiler was working fine before the fault occurred, but then suddenly shut down due to low pressure.

Pressure is created by the water content in the system. Pressure is also lost when water is lost through leaks.

Why is my Glow-Worm boiler’s pump leaking?

Leakage can also be caused by the pump. The seals may have burst in the case of the pump. This allows water to escape. This could be caused by old age, just like the heat exchanger. It is possible that the boiler has become too hot or the pump has developed a blockage from heating oil. This could cause the boiler to strain.

The seals of the pump can be replaced if the pump is in good shape. The boiler repair company will recommend a replacement if the seals are not in good condition. A replacement pump from a high-quality brand, such as Grundfos, should cost approximately £250.

What can I do if my heating sludge is clogging my Glow Worm boiler pump?

Your boiler engineer will want to do more than simply clean the pump if they suspect that there is heating sludge.

They will need to hot power flush the central heating system with chemicals. After that, they will refill the heating system and apply central heating inhibitor. The inhibitor will break down the sludge as it circulates into smaller, more manageable pieces. By installing a magnetic boiler filter all the small particles of sludge will be captured and removed from your system.

If the F22 fault code appears on a Glow Worm boiler, will I need to have a new boiler?

Rarely will the F22 fault code cause you to need a new boiler and there are many DIY solutions. If they fail, a boiler repair company can help you find the problem and fix it or read our new boiler cost guide to see if that is a better option. You will also see the F22 fault on a Vaillant boiler as they are now owned by the same company.
